What Does ANSI Z308.1-2021 Say About OTC Medications?
*In addition to the established minimum kit contents requirements . ANSI Z308 .1-2021 Appendix C also has Guidance on Selection of Contents for First Aid Kits . Highlights of Appendix C include:
Selecting Additional Products for the Work Environment: Providing additional products above and beyond the required contents appropriate to the workplace may increase overall workplace safety and employee productivity . These types of products can include oral over-the-counter (OTC) medications that treat pain/inflammation, headaches, upset stomach, and cold or sinus symptoms .
Guidelines for OTC medications in workplace first aid kits include: Individually packaged in the proper dose, tamper- evident packets with drug facts printed on them . OTCs that may cause drowsiness are not recommended .
Seasonal First Aid Supplies: The workplace hazard assessment may also reveal the need for certain supplies during the different seasons based on exposure to different elements . Products may be necessary for treatment of allergic reactions, insect stings and bites, poison ivy, and heat stress .
